Bunion Surgery: Everything You Need to Know

If you've been living with bunion pain for years and conservative treatments are no longer providing relief, surgery may be the right next step. Bunion surgery has come a long way — modern minimally invasive techniques mean less pain, smaller incisions, and a much faster recovery than the procedures of even a decade ago.

What Is Bunion Surgery?

Bunion surgery — technically called a bunionectomy or hallux valgus correction — is a procedure to realign the bones, tendons, and ligaments of the big toe joint. The goal is to eliminate pain, restore normal alignment, and allow you to return to an active lifestyle.

There are several surgical techniques, and the right one depends on the severity of your bunion, your bone structure, and your activity goals. Dr. Drucker will review your X-rays and discuss the best approach for your specific case.

Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery

Dr. Drucker specializes in minimally invasive bunion surgery, which uses small incisions (typically less than 5mm) and specialized instruments to correct the deformity with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. Compared to traditional open surgery, minimally invasive techniques offer:

  • Less post-operative pain and swelling
  • Smaller, less visible scars
  • Faster return to walking and daily activities
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Shorter overall recovery time

Am I a Candidate for Surgery?

  • Bunion pain is severe and persistent, interfering with daily activities
  • Conservative treatments (orthotics, wider shoes, injections) have failed to provide adequate relief
  • The big toe is drifting significantly toward the second toe
  • You have difficulty finding shoes that fit
  • The bunion is causing secondary problems like hammertoes or corns

Surgery is generally not recommended solely for cosmetic reasons, and it's important to have realistic expectations about outcomes.

What to Expect: Before Surgery

Before your procedure, Dr. Drucker will:

  • Take weight-bearing X-rays to assess the degree of deformity
  • Review your medical history and any medications you take
  • Discuss anesthesia options (most bunion surgeries are done under local anesthesia with sedation)
  • Provide pre-operative instructions, including what to eat and drink and how to prepare your home for recovery

Recovery: What to Expect

  • Days 1–2: Rest with the foot elevated. Some pain and swelling is normal and managed with medication.
  • Week 1–2: Walking in a surgical boot or post-op shoe. Most patients can bear weight immediately after minimally invasive procedures.
  • Weeks 3–6: Gradual return to regular footwear. Physical therapy may begin.
  • 3–6 months: Full return to sports and high-impact activities for most patients.

Swelling can persist for several months, and it's important to follow Dr. Drucker's post-operative instructions carefully for the best outcome.

Life After Bunion Surgery

The vast majority of patients experience significant pain relief and improved function after bunion surgery. Many return to sports, exercise, and activities they had given up due to pain. With proper footwear and foot care going forward, recurrence is uncommon.

If you're ready to explore whether bunion surgery is right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Drucker. He'll give you an honest assessment and help you make the decision that's right for your health and lifestyle.
